The quiet town of Steilacoom is a picturesque, small community on the shores of Puget Sound. In the early days, over 600 Steilacoom Indians lived here until two land claims in 1851. Steilacoom became the first incorporated town in Washington. Some of the oldest homes in Washington are located here – Notable: The Oldest Catholic Church in the state, the 1st Protestant Church north of the Columbia River and the Steilacoom Historic District. Concerts in the park, farmers market, an old-fashioned parade for 4th of July on Lafayette Street, and a salmon bake at Sunnyside Beach Park are all fun community events. To access Anderson or Ketron Islands, cars will line up near the ferry dock in Steilacoom.
Steilacoom had many firsts for Washington:
First Territorial Jail 1858
First Public Library 1858
First Post Office 1852
First Newspaper publication 1855
