Sedro Woolley retains its lumber-era charm while continuing to be a vital center of recreation. The tightnit downtown business community works hard to make the towns core welcoming. The historic downtown has seen some revitalization recently. As the gateway to both the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and North Cascades National Park (both headquartered in Sedro Woolley), the city attracts many outdoor enthusiast. Currently, the city parks are improving their uses and trying to connect trails to the large state recreation lands in the forested hills that surround Sedro-Woolley. The city is preparing for new residents in the north end of town by building a new fire hall in 2010. There has also been a recent emphasis on road and highway projects making neighborhoods and businesses safer and easier to reach. The town name came from two towns who refused to give up its identities. Sedro was named after the Spanish word for cedar....which is actually spelled Sedra. The Woolley comes from a homesteader Phillip A. Woolley who named a town after himself. In 1898, the towns agreed to merge together.
