A small city along Washington State Route 162 with an enormous view of Mount Rainier, Orting is nestled in the foothills between the Carbon and Puyallup Rivers. Orting is one of the oldest cities in the State and features three parks and over 20 miles of trails. The Foothill Trail goes right through the middle of town and bikers, horses, walkers, strollers, and pets enjoy the flat, paved and scenic trail. The Daffodil Parade during the first Saturday in April is impressive when the city park fills with spectators and tasty barbequed chicken smells for the last parade of the day. The Voights Creek Hatchery plays a large part in the salmon runs and many fishermen can be seen fishing from nearby riverbeds. Orting is also home to many historic buildings downtown. On a hill overlooking the valley, the historic Soldier’s Home features history of soldiers dating back to the Civil War. Because of Orting’s location between two rivers and near Mount Rainier, Orting is the most at-risk if there was lahar activity on the mountain and some neighborhoods have been designated as potential flood areas. The city has installed lahar sirens throughout the area to warn residents of a possible lahar and insurance companies continue to insure homes allowing residents to enjoy a beautiful scenic valley to call home.
