South Park boasts as Seattle’s only riverfront neighborhood. This small community is hidden in the Duwamish Valley, nearly unknown because it is surrounded by either industrial areas or the Duwamish River. South Park is connected to Seattle by a bridge over the Duwamish River but it has been out for several years. The result makes for a surprisingly quiet neighborhood in an otherwise bustling business area of Seattle. Around 4,000 people call South Park home. The community has a popular Community Center that offers public activities and sports (pictures on the right). Located here is also Marra Farm, the only working farm in Seattle. It provides fresh, organic produce all year. Neighborhood parks provide islands of open space for play, gatherings, and relaxation, including the Duwamish Waterway Park, Cesar Chavez Park, South Park Playground, and Marra-Desimone Park, plus the newly constructed River City Skate Park. South Park annexed to Seattle in 1907. After World War II, the tiny community struggled to keep from being overwhelmed by industrial development. The Duwamish River by 1920 had been rechanneled into a straight, deep channel to allow big ocean-going ships. Across the river, Boeing built Plant No. 2. Finding a home in South Park has always been perfect for thousands of families who work in the area, but homes are limited considering the demand. In the mid 1960s, South Park was rezoned as industrial. So 4,200 residents staged a protest at City Hall and got the zoning changed to low-density residential. The area has continued to struggle against freeways cutting through town. The community center was built in 1989, other amenities were then built like a health center and new library. Dredging the river has allowed for parks to be developed like Duwamish Waterway Park and Cesar Chavez Park. So, if you need to find a home for sale in South Park area of Seattle, let us show you the “Sliver by the River”.
